Autumn is upon us and with it brings the rut.

‘The Rut’ is an arduous battle among stags that brings them the glory of being the dominant male and breeding with as many hinds as possible. The roaring bellows, violent clashing of antlers and posturing can be witnessed, if not heard in the hills of Scotland for the next 6-8 weeks.

The stags can really suffer during this time through physical exertion from the constant fighting and mating. There is not much time to eat so they lose a lot of their mass and it can be an incredibly stressful time for them.

This a spectacular natural event and widely appreciated but please always be cautious in the vicinity of deer. They are wild and unpredictable animals with very heightened senses at this time.

Let us know if you hear any roaring out on the hill, you'll not mistake it for anything else!
