#Scottish Venison Day
It has been a little hectic the last few weeks for the stalking and butchery team here on JAHAMA Estates. The team have been working hard to fill up our shop freezers full of quality wild venison. We have all of our delicious products now available in both our Killiechonate Estate Shop, and our Fort William Venison Shop.
Now that we are fully stocked up we have decided to bring back our popular ‘Protein Packs’ which we first launched back in January. Packs can be reserved by emailing highland@jahamaestates.com .
September the 4th marks #ScottishVenisonDay , with this in mind. we wanted to share a little more information around deer management measures and how essential it is on our estate.
-As we know, deer have no natural predators in Scotland. So unchecked, their numbers can soar and have detrimental effects to not only the landscape, but the herds themselves. These essential works sustain the balance between a healthy deer population in a diverse environment and promoting a robust Scottish economy. The regal red deer is as important to Scottish culture as the hairy wee haggis.
- Deer management work is always carried out by trained and competent professionals. Stalking is a silent job, which takes a great deal of perseverance and patience. Those in the profession have a great amount of respect for the deer, and always undertake their work humanely. They take pride in every step, from taking their shot to processing it into products you buy in our shop.
- Deer counts help give an approximate herd number and also helps identify age, gender and health of individual deer. If there is too large a number for the area to sustain, deer who are older, have lost too much weight to survive winter, or have previously been injured will be culled to benefit the herd as a whole. When numbers are monitored successfully, it encourages a sustainable route to Venison being more accessible.
- Responsible landowners will work collaboratively with their neighbours to carry out number reductions in areas where there is too dense a population. This benefits the region as a whole and fosters a supportive rural community and keeps Venison in the local food chain. #ShopLocal #SupportLocal are two very important messages we regularly promote .
