JAHAMA Highland Estates have teamed up with the Royal Educational Trust to share why Peatland Restoration is so important.

We have been working in collaboration with the Royal Highland Educational Trust, ADL nature, Lochaber High school and the local Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) team to deliver a range of opportunities for staff and school students to learn more about the formation and role of peatlands, peatland restoration and why this subject is so important to help us all mitigate against the effects of climate change and to support the recovery of Scottish biodiversity.

The programme culminated this week with a field trip onto local peatlands owned by Jahama Highland estates, located at the rear of the Alvance British Aluminium factory site in Fort William.   Students and staff undertook a range of peatland assessments and depth recordings using the latest ipad apps, and a healthy dose of old school technology depth probes.  A range of subjects were covered that included the role of peatlands, the biodiversity they support, the importance of Scottish wetlands and the close relationship between different land uses including agriculture, woodlands and of course peatlands.

Our thanks to the staff and students of Lochaber High school for being keen and enthusiastic and making the programme informative and fun.

This year Jahama Highland estates will be delivering a significant volume of peatland restoration at sites near the waters of Nevis, located within the Ben Nevis SSSI,  and are also underway with plans for further peatland restoration at sites near Kinlochleven and at Glenshero near Newtonmore, where to date approximately 500ha have already been restored.
