JAHAMA welcomes Lochaber residents back for summer deer-stalking

Deer stalkers from Lochaber and surrounding communities will once again be able to roam JAHAMA Highland Estates this summer after the ballot opened for local residents to enjoy discounted stalking.

Successful ballot entrants who possess their own deer-legal rifles will receive one day’s accompanied stalk on the Estate at half the normal price.

Annual culling is a critical activity for JAHAMA Highland Estates as it helps to maintain balance between deer numbers and the environment, while mitigating the potential for deer to suffer disease and starvation due to overpopulation.

With visitor numbers down last summer due to the impact of Covid-19, JAHAMA launched a pilot ballot to gauge interest for deer stalking among local residents. The popularity of last summer’s ballot has encouraged JAHAMA to establish this as an annual event.

JAHAMA Highland Estates’ Chief Operating Officer, Julia Stoddart, said: “This initiative is all about reconnecting local people directly with their surrounding landscape, taking part in a key estate management activity and hopefully eating what they shoot.

“We were delighted that opening up the Estate to local people for discounted deer stalking last summer proved so popular, with many of our local guests stalking here for the first time. Community engagement is central to everything that JAHAMA Highland Estates does and we look forward to welcoming more residents to engage in sustainable hunting this summer.”

Ongoing Covid-19 restrictions mean that novice stalkers will not unfortunately be able to enter the ballot. Residents within one hour’s drive of the Mamore, Glenshero and Killiechonate estates have until Friday 11 June to enter and should email helen.polley@jahamaestates.com for further information.

JAHAMA will also be present at the Fort William Mountain Festival’s ‘Spring Festival’ food market on 30 May, selling locally-produced sustainable venison fresh from its new shop, Fiadh à Fireach. As part of the community stalking ballot, successful entrants will receive a discount on all wild venison products in the shop.
